South Calgary’s restaurant scene has exploded over the past couple years, with new openings bringing everything from wood-fired fine dining to the city’s only location of a trendy burger joint.

Itoko Sushi

One Afrika Restaurant, Lounge & Supper Club

Since January 2026, One Afrika has been bringing incredible new flavours to Legacy, and the result is bold, vibrant, and unlike anything else in the area. Cluck N Cleaver’s Walden location opened in October 2023 as the brand’s second Calgary outpost, bringing southern comfort food to South Calgary. They are celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the original location, which co-owner Nicole Gomes (winner of Top Chef Canada: All-Stars) opened in 2016.

The menu includes momos (dumplings that will ruin all other dumplings for you), curries with complex spice profiles, and Sekuwa (tender meat or paneer marinated with Nepalese spices and grilled in a clay oven). 

If you’re used to Indian cuisine, you’ll find familiar elements here, but Nepalese cooking has its own distinct character worth exploring.

Their wine list is thoughtful without being intimidating, and the portions are sized for sharing (or not, we won’t judge). They are open Wednesday to Sunday, and the space fills up on weekends, so reservations are a good idea. 

The menu is focused, which means everything is done well. Pasta dishes run $16–$26 and starters around $12–$19.

Monki opened their Seton location in September 2025, and the neighbourhood hasn’t stopped talking about it since. With a nearly 5-star rating, they’re doing something right, and that something is taking brunch seriously without taking themselves too seriously. 

Benedicts are a signature at Monki and are done with farm fresh eggs, artisan sourdough bread, and their iconic Monki hashbrowns. The menu is full of creative takes on breakfast classics (fan favourites include Beef Brisket Hash, Monki Perogies, and Reverse French Toast). The space feels bright and welcoming even on cold Calgary mornings. 

The wait times on weekends speak to their popularity, but the food and atmosphere are absolutely worth it. You can book online, join the virtual waitlist from your phone, or snag a priority reservation as a loyalty program member.

Foxtrot at Spruce Meadows 

Fine Dining | Spruce Meadows 

Foxtrot opened in October 2025 and have brought on Matthias Fong (formerly of Primary Colours and Gold Medal winner at the 2024 Canada’s Great Kitchen Party) to lead the kitchen. The menu centres around wood-fired cooking, which means smoky, complex flavours that feel both refined and approachable.  

The space itself is stunning, with views of the Rockies that make you forget you’re technically still in the city. This is the kind of place that works for anniversaries, client dinners, or those nights when you just want to feel a bit fancy without the downtown parking headache.  

Small plates run $13–$29 and mains range from $42–$62, with steaks at market price. Budget around $60–$90 per person for dinner.

Ryuko South – Japanese Kitchen + Bar

Japanese | Lake Bonavista 

South Calgary is home to Ryuko’s original contemporary Japanese dining location, that opened in 2022 and has now expanded with two more locations across the city. Award-winning executive chef Jun Young Park has created a menu that balances tradition and creativity. Their sushi is high-quality and highly recommended, with melt-in-your-mouth sashimi, uramaki, rolls, and oshizushi to choose from. If you want to try their limited daily Kaiseki Box, make sure to book at least a day in advance. 

Beyond that, the menu includes tasty starter plates, ramen, udon, bento boxes and even premium Brant Lake Wagyu beef. The bar is great too, with Japanese whisky and sake options that complement the food without competing for attention. On weekends, they offer omakase, a curated menu served meticulously dish-by-dish to showcase diverse techniques and incredible flavours.  
 
You can keep it casual with rolls from $8 and mains around $25, or go deep with a $50 weekend omakase lunch, sashimi platters up to $125, and family-style courses ranging from $60 all the way to $245 for a special occasion.

One of the first to adopt the smash-burger style, The Burger’s Priest started in Toronto and has built a cult following across Canada. Their Calgary location at Southpointe Shopping Centre near McKenzie Towne is the only one in the city, which makes it something of a destination for burger enthusiasts. 

The menu is straightforward: smashed patties, fresh toppings, potato buns that hold everything together. No pretension, just burgers done exceptionally well. Their secret menu items add an element of discovery that keeps people coming back. (Hint: ask about “The Vatican” if you’re craving a double cheeseburger between two grilled cheese buns, or “The High Priest” for an elevated Big Mac-style burger to get you started).
