Flood Mitigation

What flood mitigation has been done to protect homes from flooding?

As a community near a river Wolf Willow has been designed with flood protection as a central priority.

Extensive geotechnical and environmental engineering was completed before construction began. More than 6 million cubic metres of engineered fill was placed to raise the site above its natural elevation, and 3 to 6 metres of compacted fill now sits above the original grade throughout the development. Roadways, footings, and all buildings have been elevated above the 1:100 flood level. Homes flanking the river are built to stricter standards, sitting above the 1:350 and 1:500 year flood levels.

Under the City of Calgary’s Land Use Bylaw, no new buildings or structures are permitted in the floodway. As a new development, no homes in Wolf Willow are planned to be built in the floodway.

Every home is also equipped with a sewer backup valve to prevent backflow and weeping tile to direct any water accumulating around the foundation into the community’s stormwater system and away from the home.
