Studio 17 Dance Company: Inspiring Dance and Community in Wolf Willow

If you’ve ever passed through Wolf Willow in South Calgary, you’ve probably noticed Studio 17 Dance Company. Since opening in the community in 2022, Studio 17 has quickly become more than just a dance studio; it’s a space that dance enthusiasts can focus on their passion and connect with others. We caught up with Studio 17’s Owner + Director, Daphne White to share the details about her journey—from those early days of getting the studio off the ground, to the moments that have made these first two years so memorable, and what’s next for the future.

What first inspired you to open a dance studio in this community? And how has your love for dance shaped the way you run your business today?

One thing that became very clear to me during my time teaching dance throughout the Calgary area and during my years as a competitive dancer, was that there was something missing in the Calgary dance community, and I knew I could be the change that I wanted to see. I wanted to create an environment that could find the balance between high quality, professional training and prioritization of the dancer’s physical and mental health, which is something I, and many dancers from my generation, did not receive in our own dance training. To uphold these values, we make sure all of our teachers have the proper training, qualifications, and expertise to be able to deliver that high level of technical training, but most importantly, we focus on nurturing wonderful human beings that are full of self-love, kindness, hard work, and passion – because it is more than just dancing.

What was it about the Wolf Willow area that made you choose it as the home for your studio? How do you think the local community has influenced the way your studio has grown over the years?

I have lived in South Calgary my whole life and always knew that was where I wanted to open my business. We were very fortunate to have an existing client base before moving into our current space, and when I saw there were business space opportunities in the community of Wolf Willow, I knew immediately this is where we wanted our new home to be. Not only is it in South Calgary and close by for our existing dance families, but it has a large demographic of young families with children that can grow up alongside Studio 17. This is why we have seen such a large growth in our ages 3-8 Recreational Program over the past year!

What’s been the biggest challenge you’ve faced in building your business, and how did you stay focused on your mission through those tough times?

One of the biggest challenges for me is being such a young female entrepreneur. I opened Studio 17 when I was only 24 years old and not everyone took me seriously. But with unwavering belief in myself and Studio 17’s mission, and help from my amazing support system, I was able to turn my wildest dream into the most rewarding reality.

Studio 17 offers a variety of programs—from competitive dance to recreational classes and even preschool programs. How do you make sure each of those programs supports dancers at all levels, and what’s your approach to helping them grow in a positive, supportive environment?

One thing I look at when hiring and assigning teachers to classes is where their passion lies. Some individuals are passionate about teaching Competitive Program classes, and some are passionate about Recreational Program classes (available to students aged 3 or older). If they aren’t waking up with sheer excitement about teaching Ballet and Tap to 3–5-year-olds, then they shouldn’t be the educator for that class. We want our team to lead by example and maintain a safe space for the students that exudes positivity and passion for dance.

Looking ahead, where do you see Studio 17 in the next five or ten years? Are there any big dreams or goals you have for its future that you’re excited to share?

We are hoping to expand our space in the future so that we have three studio rooms, a bigger “dancer’s den”, and a larger reception area, so stay tuned!

Lastly, can you think of a special moment or memory from running the studio that really stands out to you—something that reminds you why you love doing this and why it’s so meaningful for the community?

There have been a few times where I have had students tell me that I am the reason why they believe in themselves, and truly, that is why I started Studio 17. We see a diamond in the rough for every student that comes in our doors, and we are dedicated to helping them reach their potential and learn to love themselves in the process.
